Grace You Can Touch1 Kings 19:5

An Angel Brought Him Breakfast

This message is for the state you are in where advice is useless and what you actually need is food and sleep

Everybody has a word for her and none of them are landing.

That is not a criticism of the people. They love her and they mean it and one or two of them are genuinely wise, and if she were in a different state, at least three of the things she has been told this month would have helped.

She is not in a different state.

She has been running on about four hours a night since February. She eats standing up, when she remembers, and mostly she does not remember. She has not stopped for a full day since before Christmas and she cannot see a week ahead where she could.

And into that, people keep bringing her insight.

Somebody sent her a talk. Somebody else has been praying about her situation and has a sense about it. A friend at church told her a true thing about her own heart that, in another season, she would have written down.

She said thank you to all of them. She meant it. And every single one of those good things arrived somewhere above where the trouble is, like somebody explaining a map to a person with a broken ankle.

She said something to her sister in the car last week that she immediately laughed off.

I think I just need somebody to feed me.

So let me ask you.

When somebody last tried to help you, what did you actually need?

An Angel Brought Him Breakfast

Heaven's first answer was breakfast

There is a prophet under a tree in the wilderness who has just had the biggest public day of his career, and he is asking to die.

Not dramatically. He is a day's walk into the desert, on his own, and he lies down and asks God to take his life, and then he falls asleep because he has nothing left.

Now, there is a great deal that could be said to a man in that condition. He is wrong about several things and he says so out loud, and God does eventually address all of it.

Not first.

All at once an angel touched him and said, Get up and eat. He looked around, and there by his head was some bread baked over hot coals, and a jar of water. He ate and drank and then lay down again.1 Kings 19:5 and 6

And then, verse seven, it happens a second time. Touched again. Told to eat again, because the journey is too much for him. He eats again and sleeps again.

Two meals and two sleeps before one word of correction, encouragement or explanation.

First Kings 19 puts bread and water and a second nap ahead of the conversation, and the Spirit who had just fallen on Carmel was in the baking and the touching, so being fed has never been the shallow end of God's care. You are being met at the level He reached for first.

Now I want to be careful, and I will be, because this one gets misused in both directions.

I am not saying the word people are bringing you is wrong. Some of it is excellent. And I am certainly not saying that food fixes what is actually wrong in a life, because it does not, and anybody who tells you a sandwich is a substitute for facing something has not been paying attention.

What the passage does is put things in an order.

First Kings 19 has an angel doing something physical twice before anybody says anything true to him, and the Spirit was fully in that ordinary kindness, which means what you need this week is not a lower grade of help than insight. You are not asking Him for something beneath the real thing.

You are not failing to receive because you are shallow. You are exhausted, and heaven has a documented order for that, and you are not the one who invented it.

The breakthrough

Now the move, and it is the smallest one in this whole series.

Eat something. Then sleep.

I am aware how that sounds coming after a Scripture reading, and I am saying it anyway, because it is the order the passage puts them in and I am not going to improve on it.

You do not have to resolve anything first. Elijah was still wrong about several things when he lay down the second time, and God did not raise one of them until he had eaten twice.

First Kings 19 has heaven's first response to a man asking to die being bread baked over coals, and the Spirit was in that as much as in the whisper that came later, so taking care of your body has never once been a detour from being taken care of by God. You are on the road and not off it.

The word will keep. It is not going anywhere and neither is God. Go and eat.

Declare this over yourself

Say these where you can hear yourself. Know what holds them up. This authority is not yours by nature, it is Christ's, and in Christ it has been given to you, so you speak as one representing the King. And you speak under His will, never over it. However He answers, and in whatever way He comes, the outcome is His.

  1. Advice, you are good in the right week and this is not the right week. First Kings 19 gives a man bread over hot coals and a jar of water and a second sleep before one word is said to him about anything.
  2. Shame I feel for needing something this basic, you have made me laugh off a true sentence in a car, and in the name of Jesus you are dismissed. The Spirit who had just fallen on Carmel was in the baking and the touching and the letting him sleep.
  3. Lord, First Kings 19 says an angel touched him and told him to get up and eat, and then let him lie down again before anything else. I am sitting down with actual food in my hands, and being fed was never the shallow end of Your care.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
