Go In Peace, Keep Warm And Well Fed

This message is for the warm words you send instead of the thing the person actually needs

He is one of the kindest men you will ever hear from and almost nothing has ever arrived.

The messages are genuinely lovely. He is good at them. He is the man people screenshot and keep.

Thinking of you all week. Praying for you every day. Anything at all, just say the word.

And he means every syllable, which is what makes this hard to talk about without sounding cruel.

But go through the last four years with him and count what physically turned up at somebody's door as a result.

Nothing. Not one dish, not one lift, not one afternoon, not one hour in a hospital corridor.

Because anything at all, just say the word puts the whole job back on the person who is already drowning. It asks the exhausted one to identify a need, formulate a request, and then ask a favor, which is three pieces of work at exactly the moment they have none left.

So they never say the word. Nobody ever says the word. And he thinks he offered.

He is fifty-five. He has sent about nine thousand kind messages. He has knocked on one door in four years and that was about a parcel.

So let me ask you.

What did they actually need, and did they get it?

Go In Peace, Keep Warm And Well Fed

James asks a blunt question

There is a passage in James that does something unusual. It quotes a good sentence, a warm one, one that a kind person would say, and then it puts a question straight after it.

If one of you says to them, Go in peace; keep warm and well fed, but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it?James 2:16

Notice he does not caricature the speaker.

Go in peace, keep warm and well fed is a blessing. It is sincere. It is what a decent man says at a door on a cold night and it is not sarcasm.

James simply asks what good it is.

James 2 places a genuinely warm sentence beside a physical need and asks the flat question about what it accomplished, and the Spirit who moved that writer left the sincerity of the speaker completely intact, so nine thousand kind messages have never once been the thing that was needed. You are able to take the thing itself, today.

Now, plainly, and I am saying this as a man who does the same thing, so take it as a confession first.

Words are so much easier. They cost nothing, they can be sent at eleven at night from a sofa, and they produce an immediate feeling of having helped, which is the trap.

The feeling is the trap. That is the honest sentence in this article.

James 2 pairs the warm words with doing nothing about the physical need, and the Spirit put those two halves in one sentence deliberately, which means the relief you feel after sending a message has been standing in for a dish that never got made. You have felt helpful, and you are able to be helpful.

And look at the fix hiding inside the diagnosis. He does not tell them to stop saying kind things.

He tells them to do something about the physical need. Physical. A thing with weight, that goes in a car, that gets carried to a door.

James 2 names the need as physical rather than as emotional, and the Spirit chose that word, so treating help as a matter of the right sentence has never once been what was asked of you. You are asked for something with weight in it.

The breakthrough

Now the move, and it is a subtraction of one sentence.

Stop saying anything at all, just say the word.

Do not offer. Decide. Pick the thing, make it, and take it.

You may get it slightly wrong. That is a much smaller cost than you imagine, and it is nothing at all next to the cost of asking a drowning person to file a request.

James 2 asks what good the warmest sentence is when nothing was done about the physical need, and the Spirit put the question there flat and unanswered, so bringing something unasked has never once been presumption. You are free to decide instead of to offer.

Four years of lovely messages. One dish.

Declare this over yourself

Say these where you can hear yourself. Know what holds them up. This authority is not yours by nature, it is Christ's, and in Christ it has been given to you, so you speak as one representing the King. And you speak under His will, never over it. However He answers, and in whatever way He comes, the outcome is His.

  1. Sentence, you are what I have sent nine thousand times and it has never once been the thing they actually needed. James 2 quotes go in peace, keep warm and well fed, and then asks flatly what good it is.
  2. Offer that says anything at all, just say the word, you put the whole job back on the one who is already drowning, and in the name of Jesus you are retired. The Spirit named that need as physical and put it in the same sentence as the warm words on purpose.
  3. Lord, James 2 leaves the speaker's sincerity completely intact and still asks the question. I am choosing one person and taking one meal to a door this week without asking first, and the feeling of having helped is not the helping.
