Whoever Turns UpProverbs 3:28

Do Not Say Come Back Tomorrow

This message is for the postponing you do of a good thing you are already able to do today

He is going to do it. He genuinely is. It has been moved eleven times.

The thing itself is small. It is an afternoon, for a man he has known for years who is having a bad stretch, and it involves a job that needs two people and a car.

It has been in his diary since March.

It has moved because of a work thing, and then a weekend away, and then a fortnight where everything was on top of him, and then twice because he was tired, and then several times for reasons he could not now reconstruct.

None of those were lies. That is what makes this hard to see. Every single postponement had an actual reason attached to it.

And the effect of eleven honest reasons is identical to the effect of a refusal, except that he gets to think of himself as somebody who is helping, because the intention keeps being renewed.

It is August. The job still needs two people and a car.

And the man waiting has stopped mentioning it, which is the part that should worry him most, because a person who has stopped mentioning it has drawn a conclusion.

So let me ask you.

What could you do today that you have scheduled for a better week?

Do Not Say Come Back Tomorrow

The proverb forbids a specific sentence

There is a proverb that does not deal in principles. It quotes a sentence and tells you not to say it.

Do not say to your neighbor, Come back tomorrow and I will give it to you, when you already have it with you.Proverbs 3:28

Read what is being prohibited. Not stinginess. Not refusal.

A delay. A perfectly polite one, spoken by somebody who fully intends to follow through.

Proverbs 3 forbids the postponement of a good thing rather than the withholding of it, and the Spirit who gave that word aimed at the person who means to do it later, so eleven honest reasons have never once been distinguishable from a refusal at the other end.

Now, my friend, in this house we are careful, so let me say the fair thing first.

Your reasons were real. I have looked at them with you and there is not a fabricated one in the list. You were genuinely busy in April, and you were genuinely on the floor in June. Proverbs 3 still grounds the whole prohibition on the thing being already in your hand rather than on your attitude, and the Spirit put possession in that verse as the trigger.

The proverb knows that. It is not accusing anybody of lying. It does not mention motive at all.

It only mentions one fact, and the fact is at the end of the verse.

When you already have it with you. The whole prohibition rests on capacity, not intention. It is aimed at the man who can, today.

Proverbs 3 grounds the whole instruction on the thing being already in your hand rather than on your attitude toward the person, and the Spirit put possession into the sentence as the trigger, which means the diary entry you have moved eleven times has been a thing you could have done any of those eleven times.

And notice who the sentence is addressed to. Your neighbor. Somebody near, somebody you will see again, somebody who has to live in the gap between your intention and your calendar.

Proverbs 3 puts a person on the other end of the delay rather than a task, and the Spirit was in that framing, so a postponement that costs you nothing has never once been free at the other end.

The breakthrough

Now the turn, and it removes a word from your vocabulary.

Do it today or say you cannot.

Those are the two honest options and there is no third. The third one, the one you have been living in, is called next week and it has consumed five months. Proverbs 3 puts a neighbor on the far end of the delay rather than a task, and the Spirit was in that framing, so you are holding something that belongs in somebody else's hands today.

If today is genuinely impossible, then tell the man plainly that you cannot, which is a kindness, because it releases him from waiting.

But if you can, and you know whether you can, then today.

Proverbs 3 forbids come back tomorrow on the grounds that you already have it with you, and the Spirit put the whole weight on the having rather than on the wanting to, so acting now has never once required a better week than this one.

Eleven postponements. One afternoon.

Declare this over yourself

Say these where you can hear yourself. Know what holds them up. This authority is not yours by nature, it is Christ's, and in Christ it has been given to you, so you speak as one representing the King. And you speak under His will, never over it. However He answers, and in whatever way He comes, the outcome is His.

  1. Tomorrow, you are where I have put a good thing eleven times and I have it with me now. Proverbs 3 says do not tell your neighbor to come back tomorrow when you already have it with you.
  2. Eleven honest reasons with a real fact behind every one of them, at the other end you are indistinguishable from a refusal, and in the name of Jesus you stop today. The Spirit grounded that whole prohibition on capacity and never once on my intention.
  3. Lord, Proverbs 3 puts a neighbor on the other end of the delay and not a task. I am doing the thing today rather than putting it in a week that is better than this one, and he has stopped mentioning it, which means he has drawn a conclusion.
