Whoever Turns UpMatthew 25:40

The Folder and the Doorbell

This message is for the four years you have meant to help somebody, and the man two doors down whose light is on at eleven every night

There is a folder on her phone called Look Into.

Thirty one things in it. A shelter that needs weekend cover. A fostering enquiry form, half filled. A walk somebody organized that she saved and never opened. Two articles about hunger in this country that she read all the way through, at eleven at night, with her chest genuinely aching.

She is not a hard woman. That is what makes this hard to say. She feels it. She feels it more than the people around her feel it, and she has cried about strangers she will never meet.

Last Tuesday at twenty to nine the doorbell went and she stood in the hall and did not answer it.

She was in her dressing gown, and she knew who it was, because it is always who it is. The man from number fourteen. He wants to talk about the bins, or the hedge, or the thing the council said. He talks for twenty minutes and he stands too close and there is a smell of the house behind him, and by the time you get back in the kitchen the tea is cold.

She stood behind her own front door with her hand flat on the wood until the shape went away from the glass.

And then, going up to bed at eleven, she looked out of the landing window, and his light was on. It is always on. She has known that for four years the way you know the shape of your own street, without ever once thinking about it.

And now I am going to stop saying she.

Because you have a folder. Maybe it is not on your phone. Maybe it is a conversation you have had with your husband about doing something proper one day, or a charity leaflet on the hall table that has been there since March, or a whole settled opinion about how the world ought to treat its poor that you hold sincerely and have never once had to carry up a flight of stairs.

And somewhere within about ninety seconds of your front door there is a light on at eleven at night.

The Folder and the Doorbell

The difference between a cause and a person

I am not going to tell you off. There is nothing wrong with you, and the feeling in your chest at eleven at night when you read about hungry children is not fake and it is not cheap. It is the right feeling. It is simply not yet attached to anything.

Here is the trouble with the abstract. It is unlimited, and unlimited is exactly what nobody can carry. Hunger, as a subject, has no end and no address and no doorbell. You cannot feed it. You can only feel about it, and feeling about a thing you cannot reach is a slow way to become tired.

A person has an address.

And that is what the Lord did with the whole enormous business of human need. Watch how small He makes the unit.

Truly I say to you, as much as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.Matthew 25:40

One.

Not the poor. Not the cause. One of the least of these, singular, and every word of the sentence hangs off that number. He did not ask anybody to solve hunger. He said, one, and He said it to people who were about to be scattered across an empire with nothing in their hands. Matthew 25 puts the whole sentence on a single person rather than on a category, and the Spirit was in that number, so you are not being asked for the problem. You have already been given the one.

And notice what He does with Himself in that sentence. He does not say you did it for my sake, or you did it and I noticed, or you did it and it goes on your account. He says you did it to me. He puts Himself inside the person at the door. That is either the most extraordinary thing ever said about a stranger or it is nothing at all, and He was not in the habit of saying things that were nothing at all.

This is where that long old word comes from, the one that means universal. Before it was ever the name of an institution, it meant that this was for everybody, everywhere, without a list. And the way a thing like that actually happened, century after century, was never a policy. It was houses. Doors that did not close. A pot on the stove that was made slightly larger than the family needed, on purpose, in case.

Whoever turned up got fed. That is all it ever was. Matthew 25 names one of the least of these and no list at all, and the Spirit has never once counted a door as too small, so you are equipped for this already. You have a pot and a doorbell and a name.

The breakthrough

So close the folder.

Not for ever. Not because caring about the wide world is wrong; keep every bit of that. Close it for this week, and come down to one.

You already know who. You have known since the second paragraph of this message, and something in you has been arguing with it ever since, and the argument has been the same argument for four years: he talks too long, it will not be enough, it is not really addressing the problem. Matthew 25 names food and drink and a visit rather than a solution, and the Spirit was in that ordinary list, so you have been measuring your hour against a job nobody gave you.

Of course it is not addressing the problem. You were never given the problem. You were given a street. Matthew 25 says one of the least of these, singular, and the Spirit put the whole weight of that sentence on a single person.

And I want to take one weight off you before you go. This is not the beginning of a commitment you have to sustain for the rest of your life. You are not signing up for anything. One meal. One hour. One evening where the tea goes cold because you let a man talk about the bins for twenty minutes and it turned out he was not talking about the bins. Matthew 25 leaves the ones He commends unable to remember doing any of it, and the Spirit was in every unrecorded evening of it, so you are not signing anything tonight.

That is not a small version of the real thing. That is the real thing. It has always been the real thing, and the folder was the small version.

Declare this over yourself

Say these where you can hear yourself. This is not you generating compassion; the compassion is His and it has already been given to you in Christ, and you are agreeing with it out loud. Speak to the habit and to the delay, and bless the person by name. What that hour turns into is His to decide, and He may answer in a way you did not plan.

  1. Four years of meaning to help somebody, you are over, and the man two doors down still has his light on at eleven. God says whatever I do for one of the least of these I do for Him, and one is a number I can count to.
  2. Fear that turning up at his door would be an intrusion, you have kept me on my own side of two doors for four years, and in the name of Jesus you are put down. The Spirit is in the person at my door and not only in the cause on my phone.
  3. Lord, You called Yourself hungry and said the least of these was You. I am feeding whoever turns up this week and starting with the one whose light I already know, and the chair is already out.
