She has something to offer and she has decided it would be embarrassing.
Here is the situation. Somebody she knows is in real trouble. Not vague trouble. The specific, grinding kind, with money and health and a person who left, all at once.
Here is what she has. About forty minutes on a Wednesday and the ability to make one decent meal.
And here is the arithmetic she has run, without ever saying it out loud.
Forty minutes against that. One meal against a life coming apart. It is nothing. It is worse than nothing, because turning up with a lasagna in the middle of a catastrophe looks like you have not understood the size of what is happening.
So she has done nothing for five weeks, and the reason she has done nothing is that she cares about the size of it.
That is the part that is worth stopping on. Her inaction is not indifference. It is proportion.
She is twenty-four and she has spent five weeks being respectful of a scale she cannot match, while somebody four streets away has not eaten a hot meal that they did not have to think about.
So let me ask you.
What are you not offering because it would look ridiculous?

Somebody said the arithmetic out loud
The story on the hillside is famous for how it ends and I want the eleven seconds before it starts.
There is a crowd of five thousand, there is no food, and Andrew comes back with a report that is basically an apology.
Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?John 6:9
Read that second half. But how far will they go among so many?
That is your sentence. That is exactly the arithmetic you have been running for five weeks, and it is in the Bible, said out loud, by a man standing next to Jesus.
John 6 records the not-enough calculation being spoken aloud without correcting the arithmetic itself, and the Spirit left that objection standing in the text, so the sum you have been running has never once been wrong about the numbers.
Okay, here is the honest bit, and it is smaller than you think.
Andrew was right. Five loaves genuinely will not feed five thousand people. Nobody in that story pretends otherwise, and I am not going to tell you your forty minutes matches the size of what your friend is going through, because it does not.
But look at what happened next, mechanically.
The loaves changed hands.
That is the only thing anybody in that story did. Somebody who had almost nothing let go of it, in public, while knowing it was absurd.
John 6 has a boy's lunch actually handed over in spite of the objection, and the Spirit was in that handing rather than in any calculation of adequacy, which means five weeks of respecting the scale has kept the only thing you had in your own kitchen.
And here is the thing nobody says about that hillside.
The boy did not solve the hunger. He was never asked to. He was asked for lunch.
John 6 gives the boy the small part and keeps the multiplying entirely out of his hands, and the Spirit was in that division of labor, so being unable to match the size of somebody's trouble has never once been a reason to keep your forty minutes.
Now the move, and it is exactly the size of what you have.
Hand over the ridiculous amount.
Not a proportionate response. There is no proportionate response available to you and there was never going to be one, and waiting for the ability to match the catastrophe means waiting forever.
Make the meal. Take it round. Let it be laughably insufficient.
John 6 has five loaves changing hands in front of five thousand people, and the Spirit was in the giving up of them rather than in their sufficiency, so an offering that does not match the need has never once been an offering that should have stayed home.
Five weeks of proportion. One Wednesday.
Declare this over yourself
Say these where you can hear yourself. Know what holds them up. This authority is not yours by nature, it is Christ's, and in Christ it has been given to you, so you speak as one representing the King. And you speak under His will, never over it. However He answers, and in whatever way He comes, the outcome is His.
- Not enough, you are the arithmetic I have run for five weeks and somebody said it out loud in the text and handed the loaves over anyway. John 6 says here is a boy with five small barley loaves, but how far will they go among so many.
- Respect for a scale I cannot match, you look like proportion and you have kept the only thing I had in my own kitchen, and in the name of Jesus you are done. The Spirit was in the loaves changing hands and never in whether they added up.
- Lord, John 6 gives the boy the small part and keeps the multiplying entirely out of his hands. I am taking one meal round this week without apologizing for the size of it at the door, and he was only ever asked for his lunch.
