Kneeling AgainPsalm 84:3

Even The Sparrow Has Found A Home

This message is for the sense that everybody else has somewhere to be and you have been outside for a long time

He watches people go in and he has stood outside for a long time.

Not literally, most weeks. But that is the position he lives in, and he would recognize the picture immediately.

He knows a good number of people who have this. His wife's family. Two men he fishes with. A woman at work who has it so lightly and easily that he finds it almost annoying, because she does not seem to have paid for it.

And they all have somewhere to be, and a thing they do, and a way of speaking about it that assumes belonging.

He has none of that and he has not had it since he was about thirty.

And here is what has grown up around it over twenty-six years, which is worse than the absence itself.

He has come to believe he is a person of a particular type. A watcher. Somebody who is near this his whole life and never in it, the way some people live by the sea and never once get in the water.

That is not a season. That is an identity, and identities do not get revisited.

He is fifty-six. He has been outside so long that outside has become a description of who he is.

So let me ask you.

Who has somewhere to be that you have been watching?

Even The Sparrow Has Found A Home

He wrote it from outside

Psalm 84 is a psalm about longing for a place, and the detail I want is small and feathered and it changes who the psalm is written by.

He is looking at the building. And he notices the birds.

Even the sparrow has found a home, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may have her young, a place near your altar, LORD Almighty, my King and my God.Psalm 84:3

Even the sparrow.

That word even is the sound of somebody outside. You do not say even the sparrow if you are comfortably in. You say it when you are looking up at the roof beams from the grass, watching a bird come and go freely from a place you are aching about.

Psalm 84 is written by somebody watching from outside and noticing a bird with better access than he has, and the Spirit put that longing into the songbook rather than only the arrival, so the position you have been in for twenty-six years has never once been outside what gets written down.

Now, let me sit with you a while, cousin, because there is a difference here that matters enormously and it is easy to miss.

The psalmist is outside. But he is outside as a location, and you are outside as a species.

That is the whole difference. He says I am not in there yet. You have said I am a man who is not in there, which is a sentence about your nature, and there is no door in a sentence like that.

Psalm 84 keeps the longing in the present tense of a man who expects to arrive rather than one describing his permanent type, and the Spirit was in that expectation, which means the identity you built over twenty-six years was never the same thing as the position you were standing in.

And notice what he does with the sparrow, because it is not envy.

He does not resent the bird. He looks at a small ordinary creature with no standing whatsoever and takes it as evidence about the place rather than about himself.

Psalm 84 uses a nesting bird as proof that the place receives things with no standing, and the Spirit was in that reading of it, so watching other people belong has never once been a report about what is available to you.

The breakthrough

Now the turn, and it changes a noun back into a place.

Stop being an outsider and go back to being outside.

That is not a play on words. One of those is who you are and cannot be changed by anything you do. The other one is where you are standing, and a person can move from where they are standing.

You are not a type. You are a man who has been in one position for twenty-six years, which is a long time and is still only a position.

Psalm 84 has a man aching from the grass while a sparrow nests in the beams, and the Spirit put that longing in as a location rather than as a nature, so having been outside a long time has never once made outside what you are.

Twenty-six years of an identity. One minute on a floor.

Declare this over yourself

Say these where you can hear yourself. Know what holds them up. This authority is not yours by nature, it is Christ's, and in Christ it has been given to you, so you speak as one representing the King. And you speak under His will, never over it. However He answers, and in whatever way He comes, the outcome is His.

  1. Outside, you are where I have watched from for twenty-six years and even the sparrow found a place in those beams. Psalm 84 says even the sparrow has found a home, and even is the sound of a man standing on the grass.
  2. Identity that says I am a watcher by nature, near this my whole life and never in it, you turned a position into a species, and in the name of Jesus you are put off me. The Spirit kept that psalm in the present tense of a man who expected to arrive.
  3. Lord, Psalm 84 reads a nesting bird as evidence about the place and never about the man watching it. I am kneeling for one minute today and saying nothing at all, and a long time outside never once made outside what I am.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
