Said And Absolved1 John 1:9

The One I Keep Back

This message is for the one thing you leave out every single time you come clean about everything else

She is one of the most honest people in that building and I am not being ironic.

When she says how she is, she tells you. When she has been wrong she says so first, before anybody else has noticed, and she does not do the thing where an apology has a defense folded into it.

People go to her because she is safe, and she is safe because she does not pretend.

And there is one thing.

She has never said it. Not to a person, not out loud to God in plain words, not once in fourteen years. And what she has built around it, without ever planning to, is the most effective cover there is, which is an otherwise completely honest life.

Because when a woman tells you nine true things about herself, you do not go looking for a tenth.

She has noticed the pattern. That is what has begun to trouble her. She has caught herself, twice now, being unusually forthcoming about something minor at exactly the moment the other subject came near, and both times she watched herself do it and did it anyway.

Fourteen years of an exemption she has never written down.

So let me ask you, beloved, and answer where nobody can hear.

Which one do you always leave out?

The One I Keep Back

The word is plural and there is no clause

There is a verse that almost everybody in that building could say from memory, and I want to slow it down because familiarity has worn the edges off it.

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.1 John 1:9

Read the nouns. Sins, plural, twice. And then, at the end, all unrighteousness.

First John 1 uses the plural and then reaches for the word all, and the Spirit who moved John to write it did not attach one exemption clause anywhere in the sentence, so the tenth thing has never been outside a promise that has no outside. You are inside it, and the tenth thing is inside it with you.

And read what the promise rests on, because this is the part that matters for a woman like you.

He is faithful and just.

Not merciful, which is what you would expect. Faithful, which is about Him keeping His word, and just, which is about the thing being properly settled rather than waved through.

That is not a sentence about how nice God is feeling. It is a sentence about reliability.

Now, hear me carefully, because I am not going to hand you a burden dressed up as encouragement.

I am not telling you that you must disclose that thing to any particular person, or that some arrangement is required of you, or that there is a room you have to walk into. Nothing here requires that of anybody, in any direction, and the woman reading this with nobody safe in her life is not being left outside her own article.

I am telling you what the ninth honest thing has been doing.

First John 1 puts every sin inside one promise with no exception written into it, and the Spirit has never once treated a partial account as the whole of what He is willing to take, which means fourteen years of being genuinely honest has been functioning as the hiding place for the one you kept. You are honest, and you have been using the honesty as cover.

Nobody looks for a tenth. That is not an accident. That is the design of it.

The breakthrough

Now here is the move, beloved, and it is one item long.

Say the tenth.

Not all ten again. You have said the nine, many times, honestly, and they were true every time and they are not the problem and I am not going to make them into one.

Say the one you always leave out, once, in plain words, and stop.

You are not required to say it to any particular person. One safe person if you have one. The empty room if you do not, and that is not the lesser version, it is the same act with a different room.

First John 1 says sins, plural, and purify from all unrighteousness, and the Spirit put no exemption anywhere in that sentence, so the promise has never had an outside for the tenth thing to be standing in. You are covered, all ten of them.

Fourteen years of nine out of ten. Say the tenth.

Declare this over yourself

Say these where you can hear yourself. Know what holds them up. This authority is not yours by nature, it is Christ's, and in Christ it has been given to you, so you speak as one representing the King. And you speak under His will, never over it. However He answers, and in whatever way He comes, the outcome is His.

  1. Exception, you are not covered by the nine true things I have said and you never were. First John 1 says sins, plural, and purify from all unrighteousness, and there is no clause anywhere in that verse with your name on it.
  2. Honest life I have been using as a hiding place, you were never a lie and you have worked exactly like one, and in the name of Jesus you stop working tonight. The Spirit put no exemption in that sentence and has never taken a partial account as the whole.
  3. Lord, First John 1 says He is faithful and just, which is about reliability and about the thing being properly settled. I am saying the tenth one out loud tonight with no runway in front of it, and I am starting there and stopping there.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
