I Thought The Everybody Came Later

He has read the whole of it more than once and he still carries the shape wrong.

The shape in his head goes like this. First it is one family. Then it is one nation, for a very long time, with a fence around it. Then, late on, something opens, and the others are let in.

Let in. That is the verb his mind uses, and he has never inspected it.

It gives him a particular feeling that he has never described to anybody, and it is this: that he is standing in a room that was extended. That there is an original part with load-bearing walls, and then a newer part where he happens to be, built on afterward, in response to demand.

He is not troubled by it exactly. He is grateful, in the way you are grateful for an extension.

And it means that when he reads the founding promise, right at the start, he reads it as being about somebody else's family, and he waits several hundred pages to find himself.

Then one evening he was reading it slowly, out loud, because his eyes were tired, and he got to the end of the sentence and stopped.

So let me ask you.

At what point in the story do you think the everybody was added?

It is in the founding sentence

Turn to the place where the whole thing starts, humanly speaking. One man, one call, one promise, and the promise has clauses.

Land. Descendants. A name. Blessing.

And then the last clause, which is the one that matters here, and which is on the third page of the story rather than at the far end of it.

I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.Genesis 12:2 and 3

All peoples on earth.

You are named in the founding sentence rather than in a later amendment to it, and the Spirit who has carried that promise through every century since has never treated the last clause as an afterthought, which means the room you are standing in was in the original drawings.

Now let me be exact, because I would rather be exact than moving.

The clause is not a footnote and it is not a softening. Read where it sits: it is the last thing said, which in a Hebrew sentence of that shape is the weight-bearing position. It is what the rest is for.

The whole thing is built as a funnel. One man, so that one nation, so that all peoples on earth.

And that means the shape in your head is not merely incomplete. It is inverted. You have been reading a funnel as a fence with a gate added late. Genesis 12 puts all peoples in the founding promise itself, and the Spirit has carried that clause through every century since, so you are inside the original sentence and not a later amendment to it.

Genesis 12 says all peoples on earth will be blessed through you, and it says it before there is a nation, before there is a law, before there is a temple, before any of the things you have been picturing as the original part, and the Spirit was in that promise from the first breath of it. There was no extension. You are standing in the room the promise was drawn for.
