He walked past that building for nineteen years on his way to the bus.
Gray stone, four steps, a noticeboard with a cracked plastic front. And above the door, cut into the lintel where you would have to look up to see it, one word.
He read it the way you read a name on a van. That is who they are. That is what they call themselves. He had no argument with them and no interest in them, and if you had asked him what the word meant he would have said it means that church, the one on the corner, the one with the four steps.
Nineteen years.
Then one evening he was waiting for a bus that did not come, and he had nothing to do but look up, and he found himself reading the word slowly, the way you read a word in a language you half know.
And it came to him, standing at a bus stop with his bag on his shoulder, that he had never once asked what the word actually meant.
He looked it up on his phone while the bus still did not come.
It does not mean that church. It does not mean the corner or the steps or the noticeboard. It is a Greek word and it is older than any of the arguments anybody has had about it, and what it means is: the whole of it. Throughout the whole. Universal.
Everybody, everywhere.
Now put that man down at his bus stop and let me ask you the thing.
What word have you only ever read as somebody else's name for themselves?

It was a size before it was a name
I want to be careful here, and you will see in a moment why.
I am not going to tell you anything about that building or the people in it. I am not going to argue with anybody about anything, and if you came here hoping I would take a side you can have the rest of your evening back, because that is not what this is and it is not what I do.
I want to give you a word. That is the whole of the visit.
Because a word that has spent centuries on a lintel gets read as a label, and a label is a small thing, and this one was never small. Listen to what God says through Isaiah about the size of what He is doing, and notice that He says it as a complaint about smallness.
It is too small a thing for you to be My servant to restore the tribes of Jacob and bring back those of Israel I have kept. I will also make you a light for the Gentiles, that My salvation may reach to the ends of the earth.Isaiah 49:6
It is too small a thing. Read that in the voice of somebody impatient with a limit.
You are inside the correction in that verse and not outside it, because the ends of the earth is not a poetic flourish, it is a boundary being pushed out until there is no boundary left, and the Spirit who carried that word to a prophet has never once agreed to the smaller version of it.
That is what the word above that door is doing. It is not a claim about a corner. It is a refusal of a limit.
And here is where it lands on you, my friend, and I want to say it plainly.
You have a map in your head. On that map the faith is a set of buildings with different names, and they disagree, and you belong to one of them or to none of them, and the whole thing is roughly the size of a town.
That map is too small a thing.
The word says His salvation reaches to the ends of the earth, and the Holy Spirit has been carrying it there since long before anybody cut it into a lintel. You are not a member of a local branch. You have been standing inside something that was never a brand and never a corner, and reading it as a name on a van has cost you a size you were entitled to all along.
Nothing about that requires you to agree with anybody. It requires you to look up.
Here is what changes, and it costs you nothing and no loyalty.
Stop reading the word as a name.
You do not have to join anything, leave anything, agree with anybody, or settle one single question that people have been arguing about for centuries. This house does not tell anybody where to worship and it is not about to start with you.
You have to let a word be the size it actually is.
Because you have been carrying a small map and calling it your faith, and the map is not the country. Isaiah 49 says His salvation reaches to the ends of the earth, and the Holy Spirit has been at work in rooms you have never been in, in languages you do not speak, this week, while you were reading a sign on your way to a bus.
You are inside the whole of it. That is not a promotion and it is not a compliment. It is a description, and it has been true the entire nineteen years.
Declare this over yourself
Say these where you can hear yourself. Know what holds them up. This authority is not yours by nature, it is Christ's, and in Christ it has been given to you, so you speak as one representing the King. And you speak under His will, never over it. However He answers, and in whatever way He comes, the outcome is His.
- Sign, you are four letters on a lintel and you are not the meaning of that word. Isaiah 49 calls a limited work too small a thing and pushes it out to the ends of the earth, so I am reading a size and not a name.
- Small map I have been calling my faith, you have been the size of a town for nineteen years and you are folded up tonight. In the name of Jesus I put you away, and the Spirit who was sent to the ends of the earth has been working in rooms I have never entered.
- Lord, Isaiah 49 says it is too small a thing, and Your Spirit has never once accepted the smaller version of what You are doing. I am holding one name tonight from a tradition that is not mine, and I am standing inside the whole of it because that is where You put me.
